The skies are growing mild, Ed Sheeran is dancing through our ears and the shops are selling out of flip-flops. Hurrah! The unpredictable British Summertime is coming, which means our clients are using up their holiday allowance to seek hotter ventures. As an independent salon, this is the perfect time of year to get thrifty with your sales techniques and to make use of those holiday bundles.

If they’re getting a…

Colour

Blonde, brunette, bronde, balayage- no matter what colour your client is rocking, it will need topping up before the foreign sun casts its rays. Some fresh colours can be difficult to look after while on holiday, especially those containing Ammonia (bleach and chlorine, anyone?). What you can offer is a pre-colour blow dry, which according to Cosmopolitan Magazine, helps to lock the colour in.

Root Touch-up

You know what they say, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Right? But toddling off to a dream location is a prime opportunity to try a new colour, or indeed to royally treat yourself to something you’ve always wanted. So when your brunette-gone-blonde clients come in wanting a root touch-up, why not offer a luxurious balayage?

Gel Pedicure

At least 10 months of the year, toes are kept locked away. This gives little chance to wear pretty sandals, so when the promise of a tropical beach is in sight, your clients will be all over it! Be sure to run through any foot treatments you offer, those silky paws will be strolling straight back into your salon once they know what you can do.

Spray Tan

Nothing says `I’m going abroad` like a spray tan, so if you’ve got spray tan specialists at your place, expect to be armed with liquid goodness until the holiday season is over. To avoid patchy tans, offer exfoliation treatments or body waxes as a side dish.

Brow Threading

Working make-up abroad can be tough, so fresh brows and a dewy pre-flight facial is a must for all. Help wash away the sweat of jobs and other stresses by suggesting a holiday eve facial at a discounted price. Why not chuck in a free glass of prosecco to ease the plucking pain? A third of the world’s prosecco was consumed in the UK last year, so it’s a winner all round.

Tips to take away

💋 Look at your pending appointments- where can you offer an upsell? Checking your diary before the day starts will give you an idea of the client’s budget, previous treatments and even when they’re jetting off. This will help to optimise the upsell before the words have left your mouth.

💋 Be smart about your small talk, because your clients might be looking for an additional treatment elsewhere. Remember doing spidergrams at school? Upselling is exactly like filling in a spidergram; it’s about digging until something of value comes to the surface. A facial might be the starting point, but then consider what other parts of the face can be involved. Will the unkempt brows be lost in a clean facial, or do the eyelashes need tinting before a facial tan? The opportunities will spiral once you give it some thought.

💋 Be savvy about the kinds of services you can offer together and how far ahead of a holiday they should be booked in. Nobody likes raw, freshly waxed legs while battling all weathers in the airport!
