How it works
Examples of Goods in transit Insurance in action
Removals Mishap Leads to £4,000 Claim
A removals contractor is hired to transport the furniture and belongings of a family that is moving house. During transit, some of the items in the removals van are not adequately secured, and the vehicle is involved in a minor collision on the road. No one is injured, and there is only minor damage to the vehicle, but many of the clients' belongings are significantly damaged. The result is £4,000-worth of damage, for which the contractor is liable. Thanks to their goods in transit insurance, the fee is settled and a financial crisis averted for the removals contractors.
Goods damaged in transit
A self employed delivery driver working for a major courier company is required to have his own goods in transit insurance coverage due to being classified as a self employed contractor. While carrying out a delivery on one of his usual routes he is forced to break very suddenly. He later discovers after delivering goods that some have been damaged, most likely due to the heavy breaking earlier. Due to having Goods in transit (GIT) cover on the policy, this self employed courier was able to make a claim for the value of the damaged goods.
