Why do designers need professional indemnity insurance?
While it’s never anyone’s intention to do a bad piece of work or make a client unhappy, on rare occasion’s clients may claim that a poor piece of work has resulted in a financial loss to them or reputational damage to their business. Professional indemnity insurance will provide cover if this type of action is taken against you, covering your defence costs throughout the legal action. It’s an essential part of trading as a graphic designer.
What level of professional indemnity do I need?
This depends on the size of your graphic design business and the type of work that you’re carrying out. It’s worth checking with any trade bodies that you are registered with as, in many cases, there will be a minimum level of professional indemnity insurance that they require you to have. If you would like a specific discussion on your particular business circumstances then please call us on 0161 968 2041.
Do I need employers liability cover?
If your business employs staff, even on a part time basis, then you are required to have employers' liability insurance by law. This will cover you in the event that one of the staff on your books sustains an injury at work on or off site. You can be fined £2,500 for each day that you employ people without having employers' liability insurance, so it’s essential that you make insurance arrangements before the employment begins.
How it works
Examples of graphic designers insurance in action
A graphic example
A graphic designer recently completed work on a new logo and brand identity for a major client. Unfortunately, it transpired that she had accidentally conceived a new identity that was very similar to a firm that operated in Spain and Portugal. This meant that an entirely new brand identity and set of logos had to be created and many assets had to be replaced. This is when professional indemnity insurance was there to cover the costs that had arisen from a genuine and unintentional breach of copyright.
