How fish and chip shop insurance works
A range of covers specially designed for chip shops
Fish and chip shops are the pride of Britain. You’ll often be busy, with kitchen staff working tirelessly and customers coming and going frequently. As the owner or manager of a fish and chip shop, it’s important you have the right insurance policy in place as the work you do carries a number of risks and perils. Working on a premise which not only deals with the public, but also deals with hot oil, sharp kitchen utensils and general kitchen heat means you need to ensure that you, your employees and the public are protected should an accident happen. The food you prepare and serve leaves you open to claims of food contamination or poisoning – which is why our fish and chip shop insurance include product liability insurance to protect you from such claims.
At The Insurance Octopus, our comprehensive cheap business insurance policies are designed to be flexible, allowing you to tailor your fish and chips shop insurance to the way you want it, ensuring you’ve got all of the essential cover you need in one simple business insurance policy.

Why you need fish and chip shop insurance
Claims due to fire tend to be one of the more common claim types made by fish and chip shops. You’ll be required to carry out good housekeeping of all fryers in place and look after general kitchen equipment. In return insurers will be able to provide better insurance prices. Food poisoning can also be another popular cause for claims, with the public suffering from improperly stored or prepared food. As the owner of a chip chop, you are at risk from a multitude of risks and perils, from malicious damage to theft of stock by burglary or theft of monies by an employee. All of these risks factors need to be considered when looking for a comprehensive retail shop insurance policy that covers your fish and chip business. To help ensure that your business is highly profitable you need to protect it and yourself from financial loss.
Insurance in the form of Fish and Chip Shop Insurance can also protect you against compensation claims and legal expenses. Even if you win a case, legal fees can be considerable so it is important for your financial success that you are covered by public & employers liability insurance.

Can I insure equipment, fittings and fixtures in my chip shop?
Yes. One of our Insurance Octopus team will discuss exactly what you want to be covered in your policy. They will then compare quotes from leading UK insurance providers to ensure you get a bespoke policy tailored to cover exactly what you need. This tailored cover can include cover for any contents, fixtures and fittings including equipment and menu boards, stock items and much more. It’s your policy and we tailor it for you.
What level of indemnity cover do I need?
Not all fish and chip shops or food retailers are the same and neither should their insurance cover be. There is a lot to take into consideration when deciding what level of indemnity to take, such as the equipment you use and how much it would cost to replace, the maximum number of people working in your restaurant at any one time, your estimated business income, the location of your restaurant, the hours your business operates and much, much more.
Call our team today and we can guide you through the key things you need to think about.
How can I calculate the rebuild cost of my fish and chip shop?
The rebuild cost of your fish and chip shop is the amount of money it would cost you to completely rebuild if it was damaged beyond repair for example burnt to the ground in a fire. It includes the cost of labour, materials, removal of debris and architect fees the cost is often lower than the market value but not always! The only safe way to obtain an accurate rebuild cost is to engage a Surveyor, which will mean you are not underinsured in the event of a claim.
How it works
Examples of Fish & chip shop insurance in action
Soggy fish and chips
After intense flooding caused by sudden, heavy rainfall, the owner of a fish and chips shop finds that their shop has become waterlogged, damaging the chairs, tables, counter and other furniture of the property – including all his staff’s lockers which are at the rear of the property. The computer and tills are also non-functional. However, the owner had taken out public liability insurance, contents and stock cover the previous year, covering him for his staff’s personal effects as well as fixtures, fittings and electronic items.
