Did a customer slip, trip or fall in your shop? Was damage done to their personal belongings? Should a member of the public suffer harm while at your business, this policy will cover it.
Buildings Insurance & Contents Cover
If you have fixtures and fittings such as big vivariums, displays and cages, then this policy – along with covering the premises itself – will ensure its protection from damages due to flooding, fires and explosions, for example.

Pet Shop Insurance FAQs
Can I insure my pet shop same day?
Absolutely. All you have to do is pick up the phone, pass us the details and we can have your insurance signed, sealed and ready to go before you’ve even hung up. We can provide a full, personalised quotation based on the exact day to day needs of your business, creating a level of cover that fits you and your shop perfectly. Why do I need pet shop insurance?
As a pet shop, you are likely to work with customers on a daily basis in physical premises, and this alone makes you vulnerable to claims and action against you should an accident occur in your workplace to one of your customers. This also applies to employees, for which you should also have cover. Ensuring that, should something happen to your stock, you can afford to replace valuable items is also a requirement for any shop – and insurance can cover you for all these, and more.
Can I pay for pet shop insurance monthly?
We welcome businesses who want to pay monthly for their insurance, and anyone that wishes to do so can pay via direct debit, spreading the payments for your insurance out over the year. If you’re a business that prefers smaller, regular costs instead of one lump sum, this option might be the best fit for your business.
What your pet shop insurance policy might include
Public Liability Insurance
Public liability protects in case one of your customers or a member of the public suffers an injury, or property damage as a result of your business, with cover available as standard from £1 million to £5 million, with higher limits being made available upon request.
Cover in case the products you sell cause injury or property damage to a third party.
Employers Liability Insurance
Employers Liability is a compulsory insurance, required by law if you hire anyone within your business. It is there to protect both employees and the business in the event that an injury is caused at work.
Legal cover gives you ultimate peace of mind, by ensuring any legal or court related costs are covered. Taken either as an optional add-on to cover situations such as Contract disputes or Debt Recovery or as part of one of our core standard covers such as Public liability or Employers liability.
Why do I need pet shop insurance?
Both animals and humans can be unpredictable at the best of times, and with the business you operate in, you’re exposed to risks from both. How it works
Examples of Pet Shop Insurance in action
A ‘little accident’ worth £10,000
Due to an overexcited puppy having a little accident within the pet store away from the eyes of the staff, a customer at a pet shop slips on a new, un-signposted puddle within the store, resulting in neck and back injuries and the ruining of her clothes. The customer is fully within her rights to claim against the store for compensation as well as for legal costs and other fees. The pet shop has thankfully taken out full public liability insurance, allowing their customer to complete her claim without any loss to their business.
Pet shop blaze
The owner of a pet shop which provides aquatic creatures and reptiles has put in a claim request following a fire at the store. None of the pets inside were harmed directly as a result of the fire however a fish tank was broken during the fire unfortunately resulting in the loss of the fish. The store will be up a running as normal within a week or two with really only minor damaged suffered, with the loss of some stock and the odd table suffering damage. Following the incident the pet shop owner was able to successfully claim for the loss and damage of contents and stock due to having adequate contents and stock covers on the policy. They were also able to activate their business interruption insurance cover for the couple of week’s worth of trade lost due to the fire
