What is carpenters & joiners insurance?

We’ll carve out the right policy for you
As a professional carpenter or joiner, the last thing you want to worry about is the possible loss, damage or theft of your tools and equipment, or expensive claims as a result of an employee or member of the public being injured or killed due to your work.

Working in a profession that has poses many risks to both you or other people including working with heat and sharp tools means you need to have the right insurance to cover you should something go wrong.

Help to manage these risks and keep your business safe with business insurance sourced through The Insurance Octopus, ensuring you have all the essential cover you need in one business insurance policy.

What your carpenters and joiners insurance policy includes

Carpenters Public Liability cover

Public Liability insurance covers your business if someone gets hurt or property is damaged in the course of your business. Standard levels of cover are £1, £2m, or £5m and higher levels are available upon request subject to insurers terms and conditions. Public Liability will protect you should there be a legal case for injury or damage.

Employers Liability cover

Employers Liability insurance is a legal requirement if you employ anyone or pay sub contractors to complete works on your behalf with your tools and equipment. Standard Employers Liability sourced through The Insurance Octopus offers £10m cover.

Contract Works or Contractors All Risks cover for carpenters & joiners

Contract Works or Contractors All Risks cover will insure your construction works plus materials, should they be damaged or the materials stolen prior to completion. The policy will also cover the additional labour costs to rebuild the work previously completed along with cover for your own or hired plant. An example of this would be if you are completing an extension and it is damaged or destroyed by fire, you would have to complete the work again. Contract Works cover will provide the protection you need in this instance, and is available as a single one off policy or as a yearly policy.

Plant and Tools cover

If you are self employed or you need additional insurance The Insurance Octopus will look to find a business insurance package for your business needs.

In addition to standard tradesman and contractors insurance package, if you are a specialist in a particular field of bricklaying you may need to amend your policy to be specific to your business. You can specify working in specific conditions such as working up to 50 meters in height, having over 75% of your work using heat or working deeper than the standard 2-3 meters to ensure you’re covered.

Why you need carpenters and joiners insurance

Your business insurance policy through The Insurance Octopus will include fundamental elements of insurance that a carpenter and joiner could need whilst working. The work you do involves regular use of tools and machinery so your cover should provide a layer of protection should the worst happen. Should you need it you can also add additional covers to tailor your business insurance policy to the needs of your business.

Carpenter & Joiner Insurance FAQs

  • How much public liability insurance does a carpenter need?

This question is entirely dependent on the circumstances of your business. You need to consider the potential extent a compensation claim might go to if there is an accident, as well as the monetary value of all your stock and what legal costs you might incur if you are taken to court. You also need to be realistic about the costs of any property damage you might accidentally cause. You understand the ins and out of your insurance best, so you need to make the decision about how much public liability insurance to take out.

  • Does a carpenter need employer’s liability cover?

If you employ any other staff or labourers on site then you are required by law to take out employer’s liability cover. If you are at all uncertain, the best thing to do is to call us and explain to one of our team what the circumstances of your business are, and they will be able to advise you as to your requirements regarding employer’s liability.

Examples of Joiner & Carpenter Insurance in action

Poor Organisation Leads to £5,000 Claim

A carpenter is working on a section of floorboards in an area of a shop that customers frequently pass through. The carpenter has failed to adequately mark the area of the floor that is hazardous for people to walk on, and an unwitting customer steps on a floorboard that isn’t nailed down, goes through the floor and breaks their ankle. The carpenter is sued for compensation but, fortunately, the settlement of £5,000 is covered by his public liability insurance.
