What your handyman insurance policy includes
Public Liability cover for handymen
Public Liability insurance covers your business if someone gets hurt or property is damaged in the course of your business. Standard levels of cover are available at £1, £2m, or £5m, with higher levels available upon request subject to insurer’s terms and conditions. Public Liability will protect you should there be a legal case for injury or damage.
Employers Liability cover
Employers Liability insurance is a legal requirement if you employ anyone or pay sub-contractors to complete works on your behalf with your tools and equipment. An Insurance Octopus standard Employers Liability Insurance policy is £10m cover.
Tools cover helps you as a handyman, and protects your tools. Tools are expensive investments that need to be safeguarded should they ever be stolen or damaged. Replacing or repairing your trade equipment can be costly so you need to be covered for all eventualities. Tool insurance can provide comprehensive cover so that you can replace any damaged, lost or stolen items and keep your business running smoothly.
Personal Accident cover
Personal Accident cover will pay you or a member of your staff a weekly amount or lump sum should you or they be injured during the course of employment. The level of payment made will be dependent on the disablement or injury.
Why you need handyman insurance
Your business insurance policy from The Insurance Octopus will include fundamental elements of insurance that a tradesman or contractor could need whilst working including liabilities, full tool and equipment cover.
You can also add additional covers and we will endeavour to help you tailor your business insurance policy to the needs of your business. There are many risks associated with being in a trade specific occupation, and there are areas of risk that you may need to consider when looking for business insurance.
In addition to our standard handyman insurance package, if you are a specialist in a particular field of trade you may need to amend your policy to be specific to your business: for example, you can specify areas such as working up to 50 meters in height, having over 75% of your work using heat, or working deeper than the standard 2-3 meters.
Handyman Insurance FAQs
What level of indemnity cover does a handyman need?
A handyman is recommended to have a relatively high level of indemnity cover. This is because handymen and women spend a lot of their jobs helping customer’s decision make or plan how to execute odd-jobs around a house and wish-list updates. Consequently, this means that there is more chance of causing damage or disruption to a property. Indemnity insurance will protect you against third-party property or personal damage, making it ideal for self-employed and small business handymen.
How much does handyman insurance cost?
As with all of our bespoke insurance policies and packages, defining a cost without full knowledge of your businesses requirements is not a possibility. To ensure that you are given the fairest, most informed price possible, it is important that you speak to one of our friendly agents and discover how much your insurance will cost. As a rule of thumb, smaller businesses that require less separate cover types or policies will be cheaper than larger companies or those who require coverage across a range of areas.
Do I need employers’ liability insurance for part-time workers?
Whether you have part-time workers, temporary workers or seasonal workers, employers’ liability insurance is a legal requirement for any business who has staff. This is because it will protect your employees and ensure that they have a safe and secure surrounding to work in. The only situation that you would not need employers liability insurance would be if you work alone and are self-employed, or if you’re exempt.

Examples of Handyman Insurance in action
Handyman’s £20k Stair Carpet Disaster
A handyman at a block of flats was vacuuming the building’s stair carpets when he noticed a section of the carpet had come loose. He tacked it down hastily but didn’t notice it had rucked up slightly. Soon after, a resident was walking down the stairs and tripped on that piece of carpet, taking a tumble and breaking an arm, as well as receiving some minor head injuries. The resident had to take time off work and sued for compensation. The handyman’s public liability insurance saved him having to pay £20,000 out of his own pocket.
