What is painter and decorators insurance?
Comprehensive cover for your trade
As a professional painter or decorator, the last thing you want to worry about is the possible loss, damage or theft of your tools and equipment, or expensive claims as a result of an employee or member of the public being injured or killed due to your work.
Due to your trade type you’re likely use to working at heights, reaching those hard to reach paint jobs. Working at heights itself presents a number of risks, with ladder falls from ladder movement, slips and loss of balance quite some of the more common claim types for decorators. Your trade requires you to take responsibility for the painting and decorating of buildings interiors and exteriors – you may well work on commercial or domestic properties, or both.
Working in a profession that has poses many risks to both you and other people means you need to have the right insurance to cover you should something go wrong. Help to manage these risks and keep your business safe with a tailored painter and decorator’s business insurance package from The Insurance Octopus, ensuring you have all the essential cover you need in one simple business insurance policy.
What your painter and decorators insurance policy includes
Painter Decorators Public Liability insurance
Public Liability insurance covers your business if someone gets hurt or property is damaged in the course of your business. Standard levels of cover are £1, £2m, or £5m and higher levels are available upon request subject to insurer’s terms and conditions. Public Liability will protect you should there be a legal case for injury or damage.
Employers Liability cover
Employers Liability insurance is a legal requirement if you employ anyone or pay sub contractors to complete works on your behalf with your tools and equipment. As an employer, you do have a legal responsibility to ensure that you have provided a safe and secure workplace for employees and visitors. An Insurance Octopus standard Employers Liability insurance policy is £10m cover.
All Risk insurance cover for painter decorators
All Risk insurance covers your possessions away from your business premises or home such as a laptop, tools of your trade, mobile phone.
Contract Works or Contractors all Risks cover
Contract Works or Contractors All Risks cover will insure your construction works plus materials, should they be damaged or the materials stolen prior to completion. The policy will also cover the additional labour costs to rebuild the work previously completed along with cover for your own or hired plant. An example of this would be if you are completing an extension and it is damaged or destroyed by fire, you would have to complete the work again. Contract Works cover will provide the protection you need in this instance, and is available as a single one off policy or as a yearly policy.
Commercial legal expenses cover
Legal Cover will help you if there is property damage or injury that has caused by your own actions which could leave you vulnerable to legal court proceedings. Clients, employees or the public may sue you for damages so it’s important to ensure you have suitable cover in place.
Personal Accident cover
Personal Accident cover provides compensation on an agreed scale for death or bodily injury, but excludes illness or disease. Cover can be provided for all Proprietors, Partners, Directors and Employees, but it is not possible to insure selected individuals.

How much does insurance for painter and decorators cost?
Painters and decorators often work closely with clients, spending plenty of time in their properties, homes or spaces. This may mean that public liability insurance needs to be of a higher coverage to ensure the safety of your clients. Painting and decorating tools also tend to be smaller, lighter and easier to steal in comparison to many other construction and home-improvement trades. Because of this, the insurance prices can vary hugely, but they do tend to be on the lower side of the spectrum as it is easier to replace and claim for these problems.
How quickly can I arrange cover?
Conveniently, the cover can be arranged on the exact same day of chatting to one of our agents or ordering your insurance online. This is because it is the best way for them to keep food fresh at the moment.
I’ve made a claim on a previous painter decorators policy, can you cover me?

How painter and decorators insurance works
Examples of Painter Decorators Insurance in action
Painters Injury Leads to Lengthy Lay-Off
A painter-decorator is tasked with plastering a room but has a very short time frame to get the job done. He mixes a large amount of plaster, then attempts to carry the mix into the room. The plaster is extremely heavy, and in his haste he uses an improper technique when lifting. The sudden jolt of pain in his back turns out to be a slipped disk, which rules him out of work for several months. Fortunately, he had taken out personal accident insurance, which provides him with a weekly benefit payment to see him through his recovery.
